Planning Ahead
There is a lot your student can do during the summer to make their transition easier, including:
- Submitting all required documents to the Admissions Office
- Reading all emails sent from the campus carefully
- Regularly checking their To-Do list within their MyUCSC portal
- Thinking about what they need to bring to college (space is limited)
- Connecting with their roommates
- Reading the What to Expect in College page
There is a lot you can do now to get ready, including:
- Discussing how and when you will be communicating (keep in mind the mandatory programs, classes, and the adjustment to the university the first 6 weeks)
- Make plans to spend time with them prior to their move-in day; they will not have time to spend time with you on their move-in day
When to visit
If you are thinking of visiting them, consider that during the first 6 weeks, students are expected to stay on campus (attending mandatory programs, adjusting to college work, attending class, etc.). During the fall quarter, we hold Family Weekend, an opportunity for you to revisit your student and explore campus. During the winter quarter, some colleges may also hold Family Days. Visit the Family Days page to get more information.
