With newly remodeled floors named in dedication to two trailblazing women in STEM and a new makerspace, the Science & Engineering Library is positioned to build and support community among students at UC Santa Cruz.

Winter quarter started with a series of powerful storms affecting Santa Cruz and surrounding areas. Many students lost power and/or internet, or were evacuated and needed emergency housing. Slug Support was here to help, with a 24-hour hotline open during the storms to assist students. Slug Support is funded by philanthropic support from families, friends, and other caring individuals.

Zahirah Suhaimi (Ph.D. was awarded the Dr. Midori Arima Scholarship in Anthropology in 2022.

Anthropology doctoral candidate Zahirah Suhaimi received the Dr. Midori Arima Scholarship in Anthropology in 2022, allowing her to focus on completing her dissertation by June 2023.

 
UC Santa Cruz is dedicated to working to create a more inclusive, equitable, and competitive regional economy.

A collaborative of educational leaders from Santa Cruz to Ventura was awarded a $250,000 planning grant to streamline pathways from high school to postsecondary education and into the workforce.

Mario Galdamez (Merrill ’06, politics and Latin American & Latino Studies) is serving his second year on the Alumni Council.

Steve Wagner, co-founder of national brewing company Stone Brewing and alumnus of UC Santa Cruz, is a long-standing supporter of UCSC’s Humanities Institute, the Literature Department, and affiliated graduate students.

Alumnus Steve Wagner, cofounder of Stone Brewing, studied literature at UCSC and says he was transformed by his time as a student. Now he supports graduate student summer research fellowships in The Humanities Institute.

Anushka Ratnayake (College Nine ’04, literature) learned about agricultural microfinancing and launched a nonprofit in West Africa, taking the skills from her Santa Cruz education to farms across Africa.
